kicking horse

Hey, I need some help, my daughter's spotted saddlebred likes to kick, mostly at me. I have had some near misses lately and when she was younger a direct hit. What is the best way to stop this behavior. I have had horses for years but she is the first one that has been a kicker.

hey. Well here's what's going on now. I have put him out to pasture 24/7 trying to get the boy to gain some wt. It is working I think he has a little of a belly and some ribs don;t show as bad. Yea Trying to get him to eat more senior feed don't know why he want. almost done with the ulcer meds. still on cushing meds and now I took to putting weight builder in applesauce and giving it to him since he want eat it on his food. I would like 100 lbs by fall Jennifer says that is realistic. Keep your fingers crossed. See Ya Nancy

Here's how I think it all went down.... Muff get big bad intestinal infection off a big bad case of worms cause now there are 5 horses in a little space even though all horses were wormed. This infection causes decreased absorbtion in the small intestines lowers albumin and hct levels dependent edema. Start round of antibiotics and 2 mos. of steroids. Steroids maintain wt. but also cause cushing they can do that. After off steriods sudden wt loose again and decreased attitude. I decided to try one more time with the thought he had an ulcer and also cushing(steriod induced) . I think I am right. Two days on the cushing meds and he seems to be eating more not standing around. I hope and pray this is it. The ulcer meds are for 1 mo. the cushing med run 40 a mo. not to bad. Now we wait and see if he can gain wt. How is your kicking horse? How Rick and school going? Just let me know when you may be free to ride ok see ya nancy

Hey girl, Got the test results back looks like Muff has Cushings It was probably meds. induced (steroids) and the strss of being so sick. Went out this past am and found him down and he couldn't get up. He had gotten cold due to lower temps must have tried a long time to get up. I went to the barn to put the other horses up and he struggled 1 more time and got up. That is one tuff horse. He wobbled like a new born. He is ok now. The meds for his cushings should come by ups tomorrow. The vet says he will feel much better after I start these meds. The ulcer med nexium seems to be helping some too. He has a light blanket on tonite to keep him warm tonite. How are things with you?

Glad things are going good for Rick. Sorry about the horse. I would make her a couch cover. Work is fine a few pt here and there. I,m tring one more thing with Muff. I think he may have a ulcer. He has his attitude back and seems to be stronger. He just doesn't look like he is dying now. He even runs to the field in the am for grass. I spoke with my vet and she came out Mon. She also drew blood to check for Cushing. I now have him on Nexium for 1 mo. Keep your fingers crossed and prayers that it's just an ulcer.. See Ya Nancy

What's up girl? How's things, Rick doing better? Thought I'd touch base. Muff is still with me I'm not sure how long he will last. He can't seem to loose his winter coat don't know what's up there. I brush him almost everyday. He has lost some hair around his mouth and it looks like no new hair is growing in . Don't know what's up with that either. Say hi to kick take care Nancy

Thanks. Yea I was pretty upset Fri. and when 3 icu nurses showed up I told Vickie I was leaving. I just didn't get much sleep. When I got home Thurs. evening Lillie's grazing muzzle was ripped off cheap thing so no tellings how long she had free choice grass. I held Muff for a long time and just cried. I decided I would try not to cry around him anymore cause I think it's upset him. He seems to be in better spirits the last few days which makes me happy and his appetite appears better for now I guess. Thanks for the phone number it's in my phone in return here is mine 865-216-5362 If you guys go ridding I'd love to join give me a call. I hope things are well with Rick. Give him a wet wellie for me and I said hi. Talk to you soon Nancy
