I am an artist that creates horse hair pottery. The pieces I create use horse mane and/or tail hair in the firing process. I create custom pieces using hair that my clients provide to create art from their horses hair as a keepsake, or as a memorial from horses that have passed.

Good morning James,
My pottery is an old Native American technique that was used to honor horses that died in battle. It is said that the original creator was a Navajo woman that was firing pottery and her hair fell on it. She noticed the unique results and started experimenting with different types of hair.
The pottery that I create is a porcelain clay that I have special made to minimize thermol shock during the open firing process. I throw the piece on the wheel, fire it once in the kiln, and then it is fired again on an open fire. This is where the background hues are created. The piece is heated, and the mane and/or tail hair is applied to the exterior. It is then cooled, cleaned, waxed, and polished. Custom pieces require about a palm full of hair. My pottery is available at many equine expos, Pow wows, and art venues, as well as on my website www.Fromearthtoart.org.
I hope that covers it, let me know if I missed something that you may have wanted to know. Thanks for your interest! Anna

How extraordinary! How did you get started with this art form? I find it very interesting and would love to learn more. Look forward to meeting you at the Expo in March. Oh, by the way...could you point me in the right direction for vendor insurance?
