I'm interested in an Appy mare. She has crusty patches on both hocks. Seller says were she has been in dirty stall, probably just manure and dirty. I picked at it and a piece came off. was hard to remove. You know you don't want to say too much when you are looking to buy. Anyone seen something like this?

yes, it is from bedding down in dirt, will sometimes get sores it if the bedding is too rough, those boney areas will rub.
If you do not soften it with water and soap before you try to remove it can also pull the hair off.
Make sure there is no swelling in the areas to eliminate anything else.

Good Luck!..I love the Apps!

Sounds like the horse had too little bedding. Shouldn't be a problem if you are looking to buy. Put some kind of emmolient, like Corona to heal them up.
